Social Issues

These pages contain basic information and links to further documents and websites on a number of social issues.

***Please note that this section contains information on a number of sensitive social issues that occur in society and are faced by young people every day. Scouting worldwide tackles these issues, for example, child labour in El Salvador and Egypt, street children in Kenya, conflict and war in the Great Lakes region of Africa, HIV and AIDS in many African Scout Organizations. Before dealing with an issue you should ensure that you are well informed and that all discussions and activities are appropriate to your Scouts, their age, situation, beliefs and culture.
Education for a greater understanding of social issues can help young people to grow up with greater tolerance and respect for others, but all care should be taken to see that this is done in an informed way and with attention to cultural sensitivities.

"Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon and left one unexpended effort which might have saved the world." - Jane Addams
